Sam Moss

Executive Director

I am originally from Fresno, then went to Pennsylvania and played D1 baseball at Bucknell University from 2000-2004. My wife and I met while living in Baltimore, then we moved to San Francisco in 2008.

Ever since graduating college, I've been involved in real estate in one way or another. Before joining Mission Housing, I managed real estate assets for union pension funds and various union locals throughout Northern California. I started with Mission Housing in December 2011 as an Asset Manager, then Director of Asset Management and became Executive Director in September 2013.

I oversee the administration of all Mission Housing assets, programs and services. I also make sure that each and every day our mission, and the short and long term vision for Mission Housing are achieved. Every day is different! I am often in meetings at City Hall and throughout various San Francisco communities pushing for more support of the Affordable Housing industry. On other days, my time at Mission Housing might be spent with issues like human resources, operations, budgets or board meetings.

Working in Affordable Housing is very rewarding, and I'm very thankful for finding Mission Housing. The most satisfying part of my job is watching our employees represent Mission Housing in the community, interacting with and supporting our residents and our neighbors in the Mission. Since 2012, our staff has grown from eight people to 25 people! Seeing how we can make change for the better is very gratifying.

I love working on behalf of the current and future residents of the Mission. The people before me who paved the way for Mission Housing sacrificed a great deal. I'm reminded of their hard work whenever I look at one of our 35 buildings, or meet one of our residents.

My wife and I enjoy seeing live music and going to Giants games. I'm also happy to play pool at my local bar and not do much else. San Francisco is such an amazing city, I’m lucky to be able to simply hang out in North Beach or the Mission all weekend, enjoying an awesome burrito!

Director of Operations & Resident Services

I've lived in San Francisco ever since 1982, when my family fled the civil war in Nicaragua. That experience has helped me connect with the importance of providing affordable housing and supportive services for the most vulnerable.

Upon joining Misson Housing in 2009, I worked in various departments before becoming Director of Operations and Resident Services. My passion is helping staff break out of the silos that tend to form in organizations. Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate! It is also important to open up lines of communication between Mission Housing and our residents. This helps make sure we use our resources on things that make a difference in the quality-of-life for our residents.

I also work hard at making sure Mission Housing is engaged in the communities around our developments. Our relationships with community-based organizations is important. I want to make sure Mission Housing shows solidarity with the leaders who are making passionate contributions to the fabric of our neighborhoods.

My favorite ways of blowing off steam: salsa dancing and enjoying great cuisine (I hate cooking!). My favorite foods: Vietnamese, Indian and of course, Nicaraguan! My mother makes a mean baho!  Going to the movies with family is always fun. I won't miss a "Fast and Furious" or a "Star Trek!" My kids have made me a Harry Potter fan!

I was born and raised in India. After living in London and Sacramento for many years, my husband's job transferred us to the Bay Area.

My work at Mission Housing started in April, 2016, and has been very gratifying. My co-workers are great! It feels good to have earned the trust and appreciation of my supervisors. I started here as an Asset Manager. In January, 2017, I was promoted to Director of Finance. Now, I supervise the Asset Management and Accounting staffs, and have overall responsibility for financial operations and oversee all financial accounting, risk management and operations for the organization. I also ensure accurate reporting, forecasting and compliance with all funding requirements.

After earning my Bachelor's in Business Administration with Accounting from Sacramento State, I worked as a tax preparer and an auditor for national and local CPA firms in Sacramento and San Francisco. I love working with numbers!

I’ve been in the affordable housing industry since 2006, handling audits, compliance and asset management.

When I'm away from Mission Housing, I’m doing accounting, tax preparation, and dealing with the city departments for my husband’s business. On weekends, you’ll find me shopping or worshipping, or attending extended family events or weddings with hundreds of guests.

I like working in the Mission District because it is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. There are many food choices and shops within walking distance.

I’m originally from El Paso, Texas, but have lived in the Bay Area most of my life. Since 2001, I have applied my interest in people to a career in Human Resources. This has given me lots of great experiences in recruitment, employee relations, leadership and employee development, training, compensation, benefits and workers’ compensation.

I’ve been handling the Human Resources for Mission Housing since 2014. Benefits, employee relations, recruitment, onboarding and labor law compliance are all my responsibility. The interesting part about working in HR: You never know which of these areas you will be faced with in a given day and that makes it kind of fun, too!

My path has taken me through the HR departments at University of California, California Courts, and various financial, educational organizations and public agencies in the San Francisco bay area. I've helped re-engineer HR goals and practices in most of these places because HR works better by being a strategic business partner, aligned with overall business goals and objectives. This is accomplished by identifying areas in need of improvement and developing and implementing successful action plans.

When I'm away from Mission Housing I love running, reading, and working on my old house.

Board Liaison and Executive Assistant

I am a product of San Diego, California. Before moving to the Bay Area, I lived in Dallas, Texas for six years.

My work as Board Liaison at Mission Housing began June 1, 2015. Here, I maintain strong and active interaction and communication between the Board of Directors and staff. I am responsible for the planning, preparation, implementation and follow-up for the monthly board meeting. I am also the Executive Assistant to Sam Moss and Marcía Contreras.

Prior to joining Mission Housing, I was the Executive Assistant at Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas. I supported the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Talent & Organizational Development, along with four Directors and thirteen staff members. Never a dull moment!

Working at Mission Housing is very rewarding! We are a small but mighty organization that is making a difference in the Mission by developing new affordable housing and preserving the properties already in our portfolio. This is an exciting time in the growth of our organization! On my daily walk from the BART station I'm reminded that we are at Ground Zero in the war for affordable housing.

The Mission is a great place to work. I love the deeply entrenched Mexican cultural events that happen almost weekly and, of course, the food!

When I am away from work, I spend a fair amount of time reading Kindle books, as well as checking out the latest movies.

I was born in Nicaragua and have been living in the Mission District since coming here in 1968 to live with my mother at 890 Capp Street. Now, that property is owned by Mission Housing!

June 2017 will be my 30th year with Mission Housing. My job is to ensure that the office is running smoothly. I manage all vendor relationships relating to main office operations. I coordinate purchasing, leasing, and maintenance of related office equipment. And, most importantly, I make sure our callers and visitors find a welcoming environment when they encounter Mission Housing.

Before coming to Mission Housing, I was attending secretarial school part time and worked as the receptionist for a refrigeration company. They had two different company names with two different phone numbers - that kept me busy! That job prepared me for the receptionist job at Mission Housing and Caritas Management. Back then, both organizations shared an office. I started as a one day temp to help out while the receptionist was on vacation, but she never came back! I answered two separate phones and did clerical work. Since then, I've had the opportunity to work with each department in the organization and learn more about Mission Housing and Caritas. I love that I live AND work in the Mission!

On the weekends I like visiting my kids and grandkids in Hayward, and doing lots of laundry!

My path to working at Mission Housing began a long time ago in a land far, far away! Phoenix, Arizona was the launching pad of a long, very blessed career with paths through Florida and California. Lots of great experiences with reaching people via radio, television, print, events and the Web!

Now, the communications and branding of Mission Housing is my responsibility -- and a great outlet for my desire to help defend the right to affordable housing in the Bay Area.

The fun part of my work at Mission Housing is: Everything! A typical day is filled with lots of creative juice flowing, which makes the hours fly by! Website, magazine, signage, video production, flyers, and more. The goal is to tell the Mission Housing story and demonstrate our capacity to be a trusted corporate citizen in the Mission.

Whenever the luxury of downtime rears its beautiful head, you can find me out-and-about enjoying the local lifestyle to the fullest! Museum and art gallery hopping, restaurants and foodie events – feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn and share a great event! If you need dining suggestions, my Yelp page is filled with reviews of my favorite Mission restaurants. The list grows more every week!

Like most creative types, my mind bounces between hobbies! The latest: A love of shooting landscape and architectural photography. Turns out this hobby is finding many great applications to my work at Mission Housing.

Community Engagement Coordinator

I was born and raised in San Francisco, and grew up in the Tenderloin. I joined Mission Housing in September 2016 after eighteen months as the Outreach and Campaign Engagement Coordinator for the Mission SRO Collaborative, which is part of Dolores Street Community Services. Before working at the Mission SRO Collaborative, I was the Mobilization and Research Coordinator for the Orange County Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, and then the west coast organizer for the United States Student Association.

I came to work for Mission Housing because of the opportunities it would open up for myself, for the organization and for the Mission community.

At Mission Housing, I will be organizing tenants around the most pressing issues in the neighborhood, such as hyper-gentrification. The community resistance to this change in the Mission District's character and culture compels me to do this work. As the Mission is changing, we want to protect its character, and keep the neighborhood open to people from low-income, and working class backgrounds. I find it very engaging to be building up an anti-gentrification, pro-justice collaboration between the various communities which make up the Mission.

Outside of working, I like to work! I find purpose in building a movement for a just existence in every aspect of life -- housing, health, food, the environment, etc.

When I am not partaking in movement building, I enjoy relaxing with friends, being out in nature, attending educational lectures, or watching documentaries.

I live and work in the Mission district because I love the energy of this neighborhood, and the conviction of its residents.

Rental real estate properties are my family business. I wanted to learn more about the housing industry and thought Mission Housing would be a great place to work. I started in 2011 as an Accounting Clerk, became Development Accountant in 2013, and now Senior Accountant. I manage the daily operations of the accounting team, and prepare the financial reports for the monthly board meetings. Staff, auditors, vendors, and customers come to me with accounting-related issues or questions. Being at Mission Housing is a tremendous learning experience -- more than one could possibly get from a classroom!

I like working in the Mission District because it's a vibrant neighborhood with a rich history. The murals decorating the walls of even the smallest shops are refreshing and lively.

In my leisure time I build my own computers, something I've been doing since 1999. September through February, my life away from work revolves mainly around the 49ers game schedule. I also like spending time with my family and catching-up on shows and movies I missed during my formative years. My must-watch TV: Firefly, Star Trek: DS9, Babylon 5. Favorite movies: Lucky Number Slevin, Constantine, John Wick.

Working in the Mission District is quite new for me! There are many restaurants to try out and many diverse people in the neighborhood.

I am fond of saying I was raised along the I-80 – growing up in the Richmond, El Cerrito, Berkeley, and Oakland areas. So of course, I'm Oakland A’s and Warriors all the way!

My older sister had already been working for a while as an affordable housing developer when I started one of my first jobs at a small Berkeley real estate development firm in 2000. That's where my interest in development began. My career has included overseeing housing development for several nonprofits, including at Community Housing Partnership from 2008 to 2014. Then, I came to Mission Housing, where I pursue and supervise new housing development opportunities, and the rehabbing of our existing properties.

What I enjoy about housing development are the buildings -- from how they are put together, to how they look and function. I enjoy the creative process of starting from a raw piece of land and coming up with a final tangible product that can have a major impact on people's lives, something they can use and enjoy. The most satisfying part of my job is the opportunity to be able to make a positive impact and contribute to Mission Housing's history and service to Mission District residents while enjoying continued professional growth.

I enjoy the energy, vibrancy, culture of the Mission, and of course, all the great eating options! One of my favorite restaurants is Mau on Valencia.

A typical weekend is filled with lots of quality time for my two young sons, and my close-knit family.

I was born in Bangladesh, India, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. I'd always dreamed of living in the Bay Area! My spouse and I relocated here when he was hired by a San Francisco company.

My time on the Mission Housing Project Management team began in January, 2017. As a Project Manager, I help locate and evaluate suitable sites for development getting government approvals for new housing, and drumming up public support. Once the development gets the green light, we manage project design, work on financing, and coordinate with attorneys, architects, general contractors and others.

After finishing the Master of Urban and Regional Planning program at the UCLA Department of Urban Planning, I went right to work in the affordable housing industry. First in the Los Angeles office of Mercy Housing, and then in Seattle, Washington, as a Project Manager for Vitus Group. There, I worked on the construction of new, major and moderate rehab projects. My responsibilities included all stages of development -- acquisition, pre-development, construction and conversion. I worked with lenders, investors, government agencies, acquisitions team, Asset Management, Property Management, and Service Providers.

The mission and vision of Mission Housing Development Corporation is a perfect fit with my interest and passion of creating affordable housing for disadvantaged populations. Knowing that I can literally open doors for others makes this work very fulfilling.

My coworkers are making it easy to love working in the Mission District! On weekends, my husband and I are usually out exploring the Bay Area and driving Highway 1 every chance we get!

I was born and raised in San Francisco. My childhood house is on Harrison Street, at the northern foot of Bernal Hill, near Precita Park. While most of my years as a teenager were spent living out in the Avenues, I've always felt most at home to the east of Twin Peaks. I love working in the Mission District because it's so close to home.

At UC Berkeley I studied political science, with an emphasis in the history of political thought. After graduating with honors in 2011, I worked for other affordable housing developers in the Bay Area before coming to Mission Housing in July, 2015.

At Mission Housing, my work involves planning and overseeing new housing development, and rehabilitating older housing. At its core, this consists of helping to find a suitable site for a development, coordinating the work of contractors, architects, and consultants, as well as securing financing and entitlements.

My work at Mission Housing is interesting because I've always been fascinated by what goes into making cities, and buildings. It's a pleasure to learn their histories, and about the people who live in them. My own history is closely intertwined with the Mission, so helping provide a solution to its greatest challenge -- the lack of affordable housing -- is very fulfilling.

On weekends, I visit with my friends and family who live in San Francisco. I love spending time outdoors, or riding my bicycle. When the weather forces me to stay indoors, I enjoy reading, rock climbing at the gym and playing board games -- especially those with a city building theme like 7 Wonders or Suburbia.

I am originally from upstate New York. After college, three of my friends and I set-off on a month-long cross-country move to San Francisco because… it’s San Francisco!

Mission Housing has been a client of Falcone Development Services since 2013.

As a consultant, I work on a variety of new developments and existing properties as a part of different teams. Our goal: Help Mission Housing provide low-income residents with well-designed and well-managed affordable homes.

My experience in developing affordable housing includes working at Citizens Housing, another San Francisco-based nonprofit developer. There, from 2000 to 2009, I worked on the design, entitlements and financing of new developments and building renovations. I also worked closely with asset management, property management and the resident services staffs. This experience with teaming up on different parts of the development process contributes to my work with the Mission Housing staff.

I want to work on teams providing as many affordable homes as is possible in San Francisco during the continuing cycles of unaffordability people have to deal with here. Mission Housing has this same goal and is working very hard to achieve this, so I really appreciate having the organization as a client.

When I am not working, I get to run around a lot with my two sons, playing sports and taking them to different activities on the weekends. And when I am very lucky, I get to have a morning coffee date with my wife.

I have lived in and around the Mission since 1991. The district is in constant flux! I like being a part of the positive changes that people are working on in the neighborhood.

I’ve been interested in building housing since my family built our first cabin in the mountains of southern Utah the summer after 7th grade. I helped out whenever and wherever I could — sawing boards, hammering, painting — and I learned important lessons that still guide me now like teamwork, understanding how to utilize available resources, measure twice and cut once, and there’s not much better than a shower at the end of a hard day’s work, even when it’s an outdoor camp shower or in a neighbor’s loaned bathroom.

As an Asset Manager for Mission Housing I work with property and resident managers to evaluate the physical and financial state of our buildings. This helps ensure our properties continue to be long term, well-managed affordable housing. I also report about it to investors, government agencies, and our Board of Directors.

I love being in the Mission District. We have the best weather, the best people and the best food in San Francisco. As a native Californian, I’m in search of the perfect burrito so if you have a recommendation, let me know!

Before working at Mission Housing, I worked for a nonprofit tax credit syndicator and a national member organization of mission-based tax credit syndicators. Here I learned about the different funding sources for affordable housing, and the differences and similarities in how affordable housing is created and maintained across the country, and in rural versus urban environments.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters, playing ukulele and guitar, writing stories, and making art.

I've been working in community development, supportive social services, affordable housing, and the nonprofit sector since 1990. Before coming to Mission Housing, I was at a Nicaraguan non-profit organization that assisted low income farmers, children, and youth. My focus was community development and empowerment, so it was perfect preparation for the work I'm doing now.

Building communities and helping people live better is my passion, so working for a great organization like Mission Housing is a perfect fit. I've been in various positions here ever since 2005.

The exciting part of my job at Mission Housing is organizing events, and creating new partnerships and programs to benefit our residents. The rewarding part of my job is working with my staff to counsel residents and refer them to new services and programs.

My weekends are spent like most people: Landscaping my yard, BBQ-ing, working on my cars and watching sports, especially baseball! I played catcher from the time I was 6 years old thru college. My favorite player was Johnny Bench, so of course I had the same number.

I love travelling back home to visit with old high school and college friends, and spending time with my siblings and mom.

Working in the Mission District is great because the neighborhood reminds me of my hometown -- the people, the food, and the music. Even though the Mission is changing lately, it is still very similar to home.

As Community Associate Director at Mission Housing, I enjoy working with residents, staff and Mission District stakeholders to create a supportive community at Valencia Gardens. My focus is to bring programs that will enrich the lives of our residents while building relationships and connections within and around Valencia Gardens.

My job includes coordinating use of the Valencia Gardens community room, and screen community partners to give presentations or workshops for our residents. I interview interns and volunteers who assist with our Resident Services programming. In the case management part of my job, I meet with residents to discuss their concerns, and find solutions to issues they face.

I am thrilled to rejoin the Mission Housing team! I was once here for four years, working at the senior housing sites as a Resident Services Coordinator, and eventually Resident Services Program Manager. Most recently, I was a case manager and an activities director for Mercy Housing. It was fulfilling, but on a smaller scale than my work now, at Valencia Gardens. Here, I work with more people to make an impact on our community. Today’s Mission Housing aligns much better with my values. And, working in the Mission again is very stimulating, because there is so much history and culture here. I love that public transportation is so close, and that so much great food is within walking distance!

When I'm away from work, I love watching movies, hiking, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

I started in the Mission Housing Resident Services department in 2006. Since 2007, I've been supervising Resident Services Coordinators at the Apollo Hotel, Altamont Hotel, The Parkview and Hotel Madrid.

To me, the biggest and best part of my job is making coffee for tenants, and lending them an ear. Sometimes, what people need most is someone to listen! It's what helps keep our residents engaged, open to receiving services, and contributing to the community.

I started this work because I wanted to help people who were unable to help themselves. Before coming to Mission Housing, I was the director of four San Francisco drug and alcohol rehab facilities: Salvation Army, Harbor Lights, St. Anthony’s Father Alfred Center, and Good Shepherd Gracenter. I've worked with Single Room Occupancy populations since 2001.

When I'm away from work, you'll find me doing chores around the house, or enjoying dinner and a movie.

The coolest things about working in the Mission are the diversity of people, and the food!

I'm originally from Bethesda, Maryland. One day in 1986, I packed all my stuff in my car and drove across the country. Two weeks later, I landed in San Francisco. Like many people, the SF tradition of embracing unusual people and ideas drew me here.

I've been with Mission Housing since March 2015. As a Resident Services Coordinator, I provide a welcoming space for residents to get information and referrals and help with paperwork. I also facilitate community activities such as coffee hour, meditation group, and food distribution. I enjoy getting to know my residents, and I feel lucky to hear about their remarkable life experiences.

Before coming to Mission Housing, I worked in supportive housing and community services programs serving formerly homeless San Francisco residents with mental illness and substance use issues. I've learned a great deal about how to help people move forward after the traumatic and brutally stigmatizing experience we call homelessness.

The South Park Residence properties are two of the few Mission Housing buildings outside of the Mission. I like our quaint, historic park location -- hidden among the ultra-modern offices of San Francisco's tech industry.

When I'm not at work, you might find me reading, drawing, and hanging out in coffee houses.

I’m a Bay Area native, and have been at Mission Housing since 2015. Before that, I was a desk clerk for Caritas Management from 2009 to 2015. In that position, I saw how many people needed help and it inspired me to move into Resident Services, so I could help our tenants advance to something more.

Now, I help my tenants find jobs, housing, go back to school -- whatever it is that they want to do to better themselves. My goal is to inspire them and help them achieve. If my tenants need resumes done, I help them. If a tenant is without food, I take them to the food pantry to get enough food to last until they are able to buy on their own. Quality-of-life is important too, so if my tenants want tickets to games or plays, I help them to go have some fun.

It is really gratifying to see the smiles on my tenants’ faces when they know someone here cares for them and wants them to succeed in life.

I like being part of the Mission Housing family. We are given whatever we need to succeed at our jobs, and our team leaders are there for you. I also love how we are helping the less fortunate by keeping rents affordable, while helping our residents grow. The best part: I love how we bring our residents together and build community. I helped the tenant council in my building get organized!

When I'm at home, I'm cleaning my house or relaxing with my kids, and teaching them about what's going on in this world, so they are not lost.

I was born in San Jose and have lived in the Bay Area my whole life. I started working at Mission Housing in 2013. My job entails reaching out and finding programs for our residents to take part in and develop themselves. At times, this involves creating and running programs in-house.

Working at Mission Housing was attractive because I wanted to do something about the effects of gentrification -- homelessness, instability, and the erosion of community -- that have hurt so many people here in the Mission District. The most satisfying part of my job is that I get to see the results of helping someone.

The Mission is still holding on. We are workers, and artists, and fighters, and dreamers. There is no place like this. There is deep culture here, and it's still here. You just have to look past the designer coffee!

Before joining Mission Housing, I worked at start-ups, volunteered abroad, worked on farms, taught art, and ran a small business. I think the biggest attributes I've acquired are dedication to helping people and being able to think on my feet.

In my spare time, I draw, paint, and screen-print. I'm still learning how to code. And, I like taking in the incredible natural beauty of California, so I camp and backpack every chance I get. I'm running in the Big Sur Marathon April 2017! Time to start training!

Resident Services Coordinator

In 1996, I came to the U.S. from Chile on a six month visa, to visit a friend. During this time I found out I wanted to stay longer, so I got a student visa and ultimately decided to live here.

My passion is working with vulnerable populations -- seniors, families, veterans, HIV-positive, the homeless and at-risk youth. I love connecting people, and I enjoy establishing a sense of camaraderie with my co-workers.

I've worked in social services in several communities up and down the west coast, beginning in Eugene, Oregon at Centro Latino Americano and at Los Unidos Shelter, where I helped veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. I also helped heroine, crack, and crystal meth addicts. Then, I moved to Portland, Oregon and worked for Looking Glass Community Services as a youth counselor.

While doing social work, during the summers I led a travelling forest fire fighting crew for five years. One of our most interesting assignments was going to Texas and assisting NASA recover the remnants of the space shuttle Columbia.

Since moving to San Francisco in 2006, I've been supporting underserved communities. Prior to joining Mission Housing in 2014, I worked at Huckleberry House, and at Larkin Youth Services, helping HIV-positive young adults.

When not at Mission Housing, I'm at my second job -- being a dad to my twin boys, born in 2016! I also enjoy being outside, on my bike or with my dog. I also love playing the guitar and singing with my family.

Resident Services Coordinator

I am originally from Chicago, Illinois. While going to Ripon College in Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to visit San Francisco often and grew to love The City. After college, I decided to move to the Bay Area.

At Ripon, I majored in Psychobiology with an emphasis on the behavioral aspect. One of my best experiences was joining the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and taking on leadership roles like being the VP of Risk Management and VP of Philanthropy. I was also a Resident Assistant at my college, which is kind of similar to the position I started with Mission Housing in September, 2016.

As a Resident Services Coordinator, I assist our tenants with finding resources that best fit their needs. The vision of Mission Housing really speaks to me. I love doing something positive for the Mission neighborhood. The most satisfying part of my job is knowing I am helping other people. There is a great sense of communication and support at Mission Housing, which makes it easy to do my job well.

When away from work, I try to stay active. I love running (I was on the Ripon College cross country and track teams). I want to run a marathon soon. I also love to spend time with family and friends, enjoying Bay Area nightlife, and using my French and Spanish language skills.

The Mission is a great place to work! Dolores Park is a great place to take a lunch break. I also love all the restaurant choices.
