San Francisco, Calif. — On Wednesday, January 29, Mission Housing Development Corporation celebrated the opening of Machu Picchu Cafe at Kapuso at the Upper Yard. This event welcomed over a dozen community members and elected officials (current and former) who celebrated the success of local small businesses thriving in Mission Housing commercial spaces.
"Machu Picchu Cafe embodies the spirit of Mission Housing’s mission, highlighting the vital role of entrepreneurship within affordable housing developments. It stands as a testament to how small businesses not only thrive but also enrich the economic and social fabric of San Francisco," said Mission Housing's Executive team (Sam Moss & Marcia Contreras). Machu Picchu Cafe is a Latino-owned modern espresso lounge serving coffee beans from Peru located immediately adjacent to the Balboa Park BART station at Kapuso at the Upper Yard — a 131-unit Mission Housing affordable housing development built in 2022 in collaboration with Related California. "The cafe serves as a cultural hub and economic driver, and enriches the lives of its customers and contributes to the neighborhood's social and economic fabric," Moss said. "Thanks to the incredible support of Mission Housing, I've achieved my dream as a Latino entrepreneur. Like me, I hope that other Latino business owners can find the opportunities and resources they need to thrive in this city we call home," said Chef William Uracahua, Machu Picchu Cafe owner.
The cafe joins the YMCA of Greater San Francisco, the Youth Art Exchange and Bicis del Pueblo as commercial tenants at Kapuso at the Upper Yard.
