More than five years of community planning to redevelop a 17.6-acre swath of land west of the City College of San Francisco’s Ocean campus came to a head on Thursday when a proposal for a 1,100 unit residential project on a portion of the Balboa Reservoir received its first significant approval.
With an unanimous vote, the San Francisco Planning Commission certified a final environmental impact report for the project and green-lit a development agreement with master developers Reservoir Community Partners, LLC. The plan is to break ground in late 2021 or early 2022.
“I’m really persuaded by the unique opportunity of the site,” said Commissioner Sue Diamond. “It is rare to have this sized piece of land on the west side of the city that allows for the amount of master planning that has gone into creating an entire neighborhood.”
On Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 2 pm to 5 pm, Swinerton, Mission Housing, BRIDGE Housing Development Corporation, and the CityBuild Academy will host a festive event to recruit for upcoming construction job opportunities on the 1950 Mission Street affordable housing project.
The fair will include representatives from Swinerton, project subcontractors, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Laborer’s and Carpenter’s Union apprenticeship programs, and Mission Hiring Hall. Attendees will enjoy food and drinks from the Mission’s own La Cocina and music from Mighty DJ Delrokz.
Swinerton and project subcontractors will present a timeline for construction job opportunities to the community to promote local participation on the project, and how to prepare and stay connected to those opportunities. Swinerton, subcontractors, CityBuild, Mission Housing, BRIDGE Housing, community organizations and unions have partnered in the effort to maximize job placements for the local community on this project and in the construction industry in general.
The job fair will be held in the Valencia Gardens’ Community Room at 390 Valencia in the Mission District. The program will begin at 2:45 pm.

The 1950 Mission Street Housing Project is a 157-unit, below-market-rate mixed-use residential project located in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco. 1950 Mission will provide rental housing to low- to moderate-income families, including formerly homeless families. Mission Housing and BRIDGE Housing, along with David Baker Architects, were recently selected by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development to develop and design the project. Swinerton is the general contractor. Upon completion, on-site supportive services will be provided to residents by Mission Housing Development Corporation and Lutheran Social Services, and Mission Neighborhood Centers will operate a new Head Start & Early Head Start youth space.
